FAQ
Do you have age limits?
Kayaking and Snorkelling are activities that can be enjoyed by most. We do have minimum requires outlined below with no maximum requirements.
Kayak Tours: Children must be no less than 4 years old and each child under the age of 14 years must be supervised by an adult at the ratio of 1:1, ie 1 adult to each child under 14 years. Children under the age of 14 are not able to paddle in single kayaks.
Snorkelling Tours: Children must be no less than 7 years old and each child under the age of 14 years must be supervised by an adult at the ratio of 1:1, ie 1 adult to each child under 14 years.
Hire: When hiring equipment please note that children under the age of 18 are required to have adult on-water supervision at all times while kayaking, paddleboarding or snorkelling, and children under the age of 14 cannot paddle a single kayak solo. The Minimum age for a child to be involved in kayak or SUP hire is 4 years old and 13 years old for snorkel hire.
I am a non-swimmer, can I join a tour?
Absolutely. Our guided SOT tours and SOT kayak and snorkel tours are perfect for non swimmers. Life jackets will be supplied for kayaking and can be worn while snorkeling along with other flotation aids for non-swimmers. A safety briefing and instruction is provided before we head out for our adventures and a guide will be with you the whole time. Please be sure to advise our guides beforehand if you are a non-swimmer so we can assist you to feel safe, comfortable and adjust the tour to suit your ability.
We would like to join your SOT Kayak Tour but have an odd number of participants. What happens here?
We do have a single SOT kayak for when we paddle with an odd number of participants. During peak seasons, we may have two solo paddlers share one double kayak to ensure we are meeting our safety guidelines.
Can I hire equipment if I can’t swim?
Unfortunately no. For your safety it is a requirement that all participants are able to swim confidently (small children must be water aware and under close supervision). We suggest taking a look at our 2hr SOT Kayak Tour as we do offer this tour for people who have no swimming experience.
Disability and Accessibility
Our team want to create memories for as many people as we can so we try to find options to suit all participant needs.
Unfortunately, due to safety we are not able to offer our experiences to any person with conditions that include seizures.
Get in contact with us to discuss your needs- our team are here to help.
Size and Weight Limits
Our top priority is the safety of both customers and guides. To join a tour, all participants must be able to:
- Fit comfortably into our safety gear and kayak equipment.
- Sit upright in the kayak cockpit with legs stretched out in front for at least 1.5 hours.
- Balance independently on flat water and paddle without assistance.
Tip: Not sure if this is right for you? Try sitting on the floor with legs outstretched and use a broom or stick as a pretend paddle. If you can do this comfortably, you should be fine in the kayak.
Equipment size and weight limits:
- Lifejacket waist straps: up to 135 cm (XXL)
- Lifejacket chest straps: up to 125 cm (XXL)
- Kayak seat width (at hip height): 45 cm
- Maximum kayak load: 230 kg (double kayak) This weight is ideally balanced between both participants.
If you meet these requirements, you’re ready to get on the water!
Do I need to be an athlete or experienced paddler to join your tours?
Absolutely not!
We have tour options to suit all experience and fitness levels. So long as you are able to sit upright with your legs straight whilst being able to move your arms for roughly 1.5hours, you are good to go!
Our SOT Kayak Tour is more relaxed and a great introductory option for you to test out paddling.
Get in touch if you are unsure, our team can help you decide if our tours are for you.
Can I bring my dog?
At JBK we love our furry friends and are happy to include them wherever possible. Our hire kayaks are doggo friendly and can accommodate small to medium sized dogs. As long as you are comfortable paddling with them on your lap or between your legs and have them under control at all times you are welcome to bring them along. We do require them to wear a life jacket, you can purchase one of these from retailers such as BCF and Bunnings. You will need to bring along doggie bags and ensure you pick up and dispose of their waste responsibly. Please make sure you have water available for your dog.
On our SOT tour you may be able to bring your dog along however, we do appreciate that not everyone is comfortable around dogs or may have allergies, so this is not always possible. If you have a group large enough for us to run a private tour for you we are more than happy for you to bring your dog. As mentioned previously, they will need a life jacket.
Unfortunately you will have to leave your four-legged pals at home for our sea kayak and SOT snorkel tours as these are run in National Parks or sanctuary zones. It is also quite difficult to fit both you and a doggo into a sit-in-kayak safely.
If you have any questions please give our friendly team a call.
What happens if the weather isn’t suitable for kayaking?
Our top priority for all participants and our team is safety- we have strict safety requirements for any activity to go ahead which you can learn more by reading our Cancellation Policy
Can I cancel if I get sick or injured?
We want to ensure you enjoy your experience with us. We have outlined your options, which you can learn more by reading our Cancellation Policy
Where will we go on our kayak tour?
At JBK, we are mobile operated which allows us to pick the right location to get the most out of your tour. We have a variety of sites within the Jervis Bay Marine Park that we can choose from:
SOT Kayaks- Both tours and hire is predominately based within Currambene Creek, launching from the Dent Street Kayak Launch, next to the JB Maritime Museum. This location is surrounded by stunning mangroves and beautiful wildlife. We occasionally move to other locations to suit weather conditions.
Sea Kayak- As this tour is exposed to wind and swell, our locations can vary to suit the climate and participant needs. We commonly meet at Iluka Beach in Booderee NP, Callala Bay or Vincentia.
SOT and Snorkel Tour- This tour operates in the Bay, which we will use similar sites to the above sea kayak tour.
School, Community & Corporate Groups- We work with you to determine your needs and choose a site that is safe, fun and convenient for your needs.
